Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.

His house is in the village, thoug bhih;

He will not see me stopping here

To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer

To stop without a farmhouse near

Between the woods and frozen lake

The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake

To ask if there is some mistake.

The only other sound’s the sweep

Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,

But I have promises to keep,

And miles to go before I sleep,

And miles to go before I sleep.

**Stanza 1:**  

*Whose woods these are I think I know.  

His house is in the village though;  

He will not see me stopping here  

To watch his woods fill up with snow.*  

**Meaning:**  

The speaker is stopping near someone's woods (forest) that are covered in snow. He knows who owns these woods, but the owner lives in the village and won’t see him stopping there. The speaker is quietly enjoying the beauty of the snowy woods.

**Stanza 2:**  

*My little horse must think it queer  

To stop without a farmhouse near  

Between the woods and frozen lake  

The darkest evening of the year.*  

**Meaning:**  

The speaker’s horse finds it strange to stop in such a lonely place, far from any farmhouse. They are standing between the woods and a frozen lake on a very dark winter evening. The horse seems confused because they usually don’t stop in such quiet, empty places.

**Stanza 3:**  

*He gives his harness bells a shake  

To ask if there is some mistake.  

The only other sound’s the sweep  

Of easy wind and downy flake.*  

**Meaning:**  

The horse shakes its harness bells as if to ask, “Why are we stopping here?” The only other sounds are the soft wind and the gentle falling of snowflakes. It’s very quiet and peaceful.

**Stanza 4:**  

*The woods are lovely, dark and deep,  

But I have promises to keep,  

And miles to go before I sleep,  

And miles to go before I sleep.*  

**Meaning:**  

The speaker finds the woods beautiful, quiet, and mysterious. But he remembers he has responsibilities and tasks to complete. He still has a long way to travel before he can rest or sleep. The repetition of the last line shows how important his duties are.

Song of the Open Road

Walt Whitman (1819 - 1892)

The most influential poet in the American canon was essayist and journalist. He was often called the father of ‘free verse’. He breaks the boundaries of poetic form. He also used unusual images and symbols in his poetry to glorify the nature and human life.

Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road,Healthy, free, the world before me,

The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose.”

The poet starts his journey on foot (afoot) and he is glad (lighthearted), not having any burden on his mind. He is glad to take the open road which goes to the healthy and free world, the road is not the road to travel but this is the road of life. The healthy world is the world where all human values are respected and followed by all. And the free world shows that the value of liberty as well as the people who are using the freedom not only for their own self but for the welfare the humanity. He thinks this world is his.

And the long brown path is the path which will take him to wherever he wants, wherever he chooses, this shows his optimism and healthy mind which is free to do many things.

Henceforth I ask not good-fortune; I myself am good-fortune,

Henceforth I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing,

Done with indoor complaints, libraries, querulous criticisms,

Strong and content I travel the open road.

The poet has very optimistic and positive approach the road of life. There is no feeling or fear of bad luck or negativity in his mind, so he says that he himself is enough to have his good fortune. Therefore he doesn’t complaint about anything he is happy to have, doesn’t postpone anything doesn’t need anything. The poet is bored of indoor complaints and the libraries (it shows intellectual environment around the poet). He is fed up of all the criticism made out of irritation. But our poet is so strong and firm, full of optimism and ready to go further on the open road that is the road of life.

The earth, that is sufficient,

I don’t want constellations nearer,

I know they are very well where they are,

I know they suffice for those who belong to them.

The earth is sufficient for the poet means the free world is enough for him where is will meet new and different people. He doesn’t want influential people who always criticize someone like the poem and try to use their influence over others. He knows that these influential people are now away from him, and the poet is happy to have this distance. He knows it better that these people suffice means work only for the people who are in their favour.  (May be this is the thing in the life of the poet when he was criticized by all influential people, and there he would have seen some partial treatment)  

(Still here I carry my old delicious burdens,

I carry them, men and women; I carry them with me wherever I go,

I swear it is impossible for me to get rid of them,

I’m filled with them, and I will fill them in return)

In the last stanza the poet is talking about the old burdens which are very delicious means his sweet memories of the past and these memories are there in plenty. These are memories of men and women of his past life which gives him immense joy and happiness. He always cherishes these sweet memories wherever he goes. He thinks that it is impossible for him to get rid of these burdens throughout his life. At the end he says that these people or memories have given him a lot and he promises that he will give them in return a lot.

1.1 A Teenager's Prayer

Each day brings new beginnings,
Decisions I must make. 
I am the only one to choose
The road that I will take.

Here the poet speaks as if he is a teenager and wanted to tell the condition of the mind of a teenager. At the very delicate time of his life by saying...
I (the teenager ) have new beginnings each and every day and new things to do,
He tells us that we have to make new decisions about whether they are easy or difficult ones, we ourselves choose them firmly and we have to decide what way we are going to walk further.

I can choose to take the road of life,

That leads to great success 

Or travel down the darkened road,

That leads to great distress.

Poet is just trying to tell us the dilemma of the teenager's mind, he(the teenager)has many things in front of him, he has to choose between the two- One path can lead him to great success if he goes on the positive and right way with great thoughts.
And the other road can lead him to great distress and gloominess in life.

Please open up my eyes dear Lord,

That I might clearly see 

Help me stand for what is right,

Bring out the best in me.

Here the poet or the teenager requests God to make him the wise to see things clearly without any partial thought or view to listen to his inner voice.
He just wants to get help from God to walk on the right path or way to be right and to do right, as he wants to bring out the best from within. 

Help Lord just say "no"

When Temptation comes my way,

That I might keep my body clean

And fit for life each day.

The teenager wants some strength and power to avoid Temptation he doesn't want to become weaker in tempting situations. The temptation of the things which might take him to distress.
He wants help to be clean and strong physically as well as clean from within i.e. his body and soul by remaining away from tempting things or the bad things which are always there in a teenager's life

When my teenage years are over,

I know that I will see  

That life is lived its very best 

With you walking next to me.

 When I will grow young leaving away from my teenage
 I will be happy to know the life I lived in whatever age it is, it is the best with great things and great deeds of success. and I  know it's only because of you (God). Because you showed me the right way, path or road,  to do the right and just things.

The central idea of the poem - (in detail for understanding)

               Teenage or adolescence is a very important age in everyone's life because it decides the fate or the future of that person. If they go on the right path, it makes their life, as well as others, live better. But, if they go on the wrong path, it is very difficult to bring them back on the right path. Teenagers are always having,  learning and a creative mind and a view with a lot of vigour and strength. They are always eager to do the things which may be new for them and in that eagerness sometimes they might go on the wrong path. 
                 The poet tells that God can show him the proper way to the teenager. (the God in the poem is the symbol of the person's inner mind or maybe his family or society, where he learns to differentiate the right or just things against the wrong things.

If they go on the right path, it makes their life better, successful, and easy. But, if they go on the wrong path, it is very difficult to bring them back. They are always eager to know more and do new things and in that eagerness sometimes they might go on the wrong path. 
                 The teenager is praying to God for a clear view. The God in the poem is the symbol of the person's inner voice (conscience) or maybe ideal people around him, where he learns to differentiate the right or just things against the wrong things. The teenager wants to be happy and succeeds in life during his teenage as well as future life.
