Walk A Little Slower...
Standard 9th, English Poem Explanation
'Walk a little slower, Daddy,'
Said a little child so small.
' I'm following in your footsteps
and I don't want to fall.
Understanding the Text
Every child is secure in the arms of its parents. The child learns
many things by the imitating; its parents are the best models for him.
Here
is the poem about a child who wants to step up with his father. The child asks
his father to walk slower because he is following his (father's) footsteps.
Every child tries to learn from his parents. Though the mother first teacher,
who teaches all the basic things of life. But the father plays a very important
role in the child's life. The Father is the first role model after the mother,
who carries all the responsibilities easily and always trying to keep the whole
family happy.
Here
the child is just trying to follow the father's steps and wants to do many
little things properly under the shade of his father. And whenever he is trying
to match with the speed of his father he requests his father to go a little
slower. Because he doesn't want to fall, he doesn't want to commit any mistake.
Sometimes your steps are very fast,
sometimes they are hard to see;
So, walk a little slower, Daddy,
For you are leading me.'
sometimes they are hard to see;
So, walk a little slower, Daddy,
For you are leading me.'
Understanding the Text
The child is unknown to the world's experiences, so he wants to
know all with the help of his father, under some protective environment. So he
requests him to go slow it is not only about walking but learning to live in
the society. Some of the things are very easy to understand but sometimes it is
very difficult to for him. So he wants to understand them thoroughly, in the
shadow of his father so requests his father to go slow
or to walk slower.
Someday when I'm all Grown up,
You're what I want to be;
Then I will have a little child
Who'll want to follow me.
You're what I want to be;
Then I will have a little child
Who'll want to follow me.
Understanding the Text
Here the child imagines the future. Today, his father has some ideal
expectations from his child and the child is very much sure about completing
them. He wants to suggest that he will be able to fulfill all the expectations
if he learns all the life skills from his father and apply them in life and to
become successful.
So he further imagines that
when he will be a grown-up person like his father, and he will be having his
own child again the child will follow him.
(The above idea looks like
an example of an exaggeration but he does that to make his father little aware
of his speed, where that little child cannot match with him.)
We can connect this to
today's lifestyle of parents that they are either busy with their jobs or
ambitions and some are just indulged in finding their personal space.

The poet wants to suggest that if this generation of parents is not going to give
the lessons of life nicely, then it is impossible for the next generations
to pass the important values to the future generation.
And I would want to lead just right,
And know that I was true;So walk a little slower, Daddy.
For I must follow you.'
Understanding the Text
The child
wants to follow only his father’s footsteps. Because he believes that his
father is on the right path and he (the child) also will go on that great path.
Also, he believes in himself and doesn’t fear to predict his future life
with righteous deeds.
